JCP&L announced on Mar. 16 that it is monitoring a weather system expected to bring heavy rain, high winds, and possible thunderstorms across its New Jersey service area this week.
The company said it is taking steps to prepare for the storm and urges customers to do the same in anticipation of potential power outages. JCP&L meteorologists are tracking the system closely and will provide regular updates to help maintain situational awareness and readiness.
According to JCP&L, preparations include requesting additional contractors as well as mutual aid line and forestry crews. The company has also implemented staggered 16-hour shifts for around-the-clock coverage and response, while maintaining coordination with emergency management officials at state and local levels. “The safety of our crews and customers is our priority,” the company said.
Customers are encouraged to charge mobile phones, have backup batteries ready, stock up on nonperishable food, bottled water, required medications, flashlights, and car chargers. JCP&L warns against using gas stoves or open-flame heat sources indoors due to carbon monoxide risks, and reminds customers never to use portable generators inside homes or closed garages. Those relying on well water should keep an emergency supply of bottled water or fill bathtubs with fresh water in advance.
The company advises residents to stay away from fallen or sagging power lines, treating all downed lines as energized hazards that should be reported immediately. Families with medical needs or elderly members are urged to make alternate shelter arrangements if necessary.
