Happy International Women's Day and National Women's Month! Many notable women in history have impacted addiction recovery, including former first lady Betty Ford who bravely announced in 1978 that she had an addiction to prescription medication and alcohol and would seek treatment. Her experience in treatment motivated her to found the Hazelden Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, CA, with 8 locations in the U.S.
And, at a time when most people who sought rehab were men, Betty mandated that the Betty Ford Center always keep enough beds available for women as well, acknowledging the reality that women struggle with addiction and deserve to have a place to go for treatment.
